NHS Staff

Pay, pension and annual leave calculators for NHS staff on Agenda for Change.

Both calculators use the Agenda for Change framework that sets pay and leave for most NHS staff outside medical, dental and very senior roles. One works out take-home pay by band and pay point with the correct pension contribution tier; the other works out annual leave by length of service. Start with the NHS pay calculator for your monthly net pay.

How Agenda for Change affects both calculators

Both calculators here are built on Agenda for Change, the framework that sets pay and leave for most NHS staff outside medical, dental and very senior roles. Your band and your years in the role drive almost everything.

The NHS pay calculator takes your band and pay point and works out take-home pay for England, Wales or Scotland, each of which publishes its own pay table. It applies the NHS Pension contribution tier that matches your pensionable pay, which matters more than people expect: the rate applies to all of your pensionable pay, not only the part above a threshold, so crossing a tier boundary costs more than the pay rise that caused it in some cases.

The NHS annual leave calculator works from length of service instead. Full-time staff in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland get 27 days on appointment, 29 after five years and 33 after ten, all plus eight bank holidays, and Wales adds one extra day at every tier. Entitlement is calculated in hours rather than days so that part-time patterns are treated fairly.
