Running a limited company: which figure are you after?

The three calculators here answer the three questions a company director tends to ask in sequence.

What does the company owe? The Corporation Tax calculator works out tax on taxable profit: 19% up to £50,000, 25% from £250,000, and Marginal Relief in between, so the effective rate rises smoothly rather than jumping at £50,000.

What does it cost to take money out? The dividend tax calculator covers the personal tax on dividends after the £500 Dividend Allowance. Dividends are paid out of profit that has already borne Corporation Tax and are not a deductible expense, which is the trade-off against paying yourself a salary or bonus.

Is the business itself profitable enough? The gross profit calculator works out gross profit, margin and markup from revenue and cost of goods sold, which is the figure to watch before tax enters the picture at all.

If you are weighing up how to trade at all, our guide to sole trader versus limited company compares both routes with a worked example.
